Monday, August 22, 2011 @ 6:21 PM

Brian has crossed the finish line!

Thank you, God, this ride is complete! May Brian never want to do this again.

Amen.

Finish Line Photo's

Congratulations to our favorite Harley Rider #375 Brian McDonnell. Well done!

17 Days, 12 Hours, 36 minutes.

Brian... is that coffee in your cup???

A long awaited smooch...

Reunited! It was a looong wait for Candy!!

A Slow Go to the Finish Line...

Today, Monday, August 22, 2011, after 18 days on the iron horse, Brian will roll into Sydney, Nova Scotia!

Some weather issues are affecting the riders... first, there was last night's fog, but it turns out to have provided a good excuse for a much needed rest stop. Brian was off and riding again around 7:00 AM only to have to contend with quite a bit of wind, making it more of a tough go.

The remaining course takes the riders near Sydney before detouring them on a 450 mile jaunt along the Cabot Trail... because everyone who's just travelled 13,500 miles (ish) wants to enjoy that last scenic coastal tour! The Cabot Trail loops around the Cape Breton Highlands National Park on paved (but rough) road. Once the trail is completed, riders head to the finish at Glace Bay.

In any case, it will be Brian's last day of the Challenge. He will be reaching the Finish Line today! Candy's calculations have Team Brian arriving in Sydney around 5:00 tonight. Go Brian!!!

Canada!

Team Brian entered Canada this evening around 6:30 PM.

Maine! All 48 States!!!

Brian is forging on... currently in Maine!

Saturday: Blog Silence.

Hoka Hey!

What a day! Saturday brought a little bit of everything into the Hoka Hey mix... drama, intrigue, mystery, fatigue, emotion, being peed on by a dog and true love. Where to start?

First, Friday: Team Brian did finally make it to the Rocky Mount CP around 4:50 PM on Friday, August 19. There, it was determined that Mike needed a whole new engine, a 4 -6 hour installation! It was initially decided that Brian and Tom would wait (and sleep) for Mike. After a few hours it became obvious that Mike would not be able to continue at all, so Brian and Tom hit the road.

On to Saturday: Brian and Tom continued on course, and by noon on Saturday, August 20th, they had made it through 6 states and into New York. I'm not sure if they got any rest, but Brian sounded pretty worn out at noon and he was no longer riding with Tom. At this point, it seemed he was moving nicely toward the last Check Point, we estimated his arrival for 5:00 ish. The trouble with our estimate was that we never know the actual course and there were no other competitors ahead of him at the time. We underestimated... not just the mileage, but Brian's fatigue level as well. Rhode Island, which was waaaay off course, had to be covered and that required quite a lot of time back tracking to get to Vermont.

But wait, there's more trouble: It turns out that during the wee hours of the night and due to his excessive fatigue, Brian made a wrong turn on the right road which led to the wrong Harley Dealer in the wrong town of the right state (New Hampshire!). They were closed, of course, it was 1:00 AM! So, he decided to sleep in the field (thus, the dog... nothing like kicking a guy when he's down!) next to the wrong dealership. It wasn't until morning that he discovered he was not actually at the Laconia Harley Dealer (about 45 miles away). So, he quickly corrected course and made his way to Check Point 13, the final check point, arriving around 9 AM. YAY! After checking in, he wasted no time getting back on the road and is now riding with the new Team Brian: bikes, 665 and 679. Hopefully, three fatigued brains are better than one!

Updated State count: 47, including Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island (no, skipping RI!), Vermont and New Hampshire.

And there's still more... Drama, intrigue and mystery are inherent with Hoka Hey. This year we may be adding "low down, shysters" to the list of synonyms. After lifting the deadline to finish (about a week ago and actually advising riders to "use their bedrolls", safety first!), Challenge organizers have now decided and posted on their Facebook page that the Sunday, August 21, 2011, 9:30 AM race limit will hold. Apparently, any challenger not finishing before this deadline will not be recognised. Stay posted for developments on this latest surprise!

And more... A secret Check Point???? Yes, there was! Brian reports that he was only the 3rd rider to find the Secret Check Point and sign in there. Incidentally, the leader and first to finish, Will Barclay, did not. Hmmmm....

And true love.... Candy awaits Brian, with 2 bottles of Jack Daniels. Brian said he'd need two!

Friday, August 19, 2011

We have a Finisher!!!!

Will Barclay is First to the Line at 5:51 PM, Friday, August 19, 2011.

Reporting from the Finish Line...

Candy added these photo's of beautiful Sydney, Nova Scotia.

The shipping port, Big Fiddle, is the eastern most point of North America. (Brian visited the southern most point, in Key West, during last year's Hoka Hey Challenge.)

The Finish Line is set and ready for arrivals!

Two Weeks of Travel!!!

Two weeks, 2 hours since the start of the Hoka Hey Challenge...

Brian is in South Carolina, approximately 200 miles from the Rocky Mount, NC Check Point (#12). He is still travelling with Mike and Tom (they plan to stay together for the duration).

Once through Check Point #12, the riders will head to the Outer Banks and Kitty Hawk, cross back to the mainland on the Wright Memorial Bridge, then on to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. They will cover Maryland's eastern shore, Pennsylvania and New Jersey before Check Point #13 in Laconia, New Hampshire.

State count: 36. All we added since yesterday was Georgia and South Carolina. The black hole that was Florida was a time drain.

Meanwhile, Candy arrived in Sydney around 12:30 AM.

Compass heading: 8 degrees!

NORTH!!!!!

Celebrating with a beer... just this one cold, frosty 16 ounce beer. Brian confirms it was "goooood!"

Candy Heads to the Finish Line!!!

Although Brian wins in the "most difficult journey to Sydney, Nova Scotia" category, Candy is also finding difficulties in her travels to the finish line. With delays, first in Cleveland and now Philadelphia, she hopes to be landing in Halifax near dinnertime. Then it's off to Sydney...she will drive the 5 hours to the finish area. Exhausting!!

Luckily, it's a one-way flight as Candy will be returning home on the back of the 'hog".

We're looking forward to Candy's reports from the finish line!

Day 14... the light at the end of the tunnel...?

Sometime today (Thursday, August 18th), Brian and Co. will be making that left turn that brings them north. (That is to say, "north-ish", direct routes are not possible in Hoka Hey, but they will definately be on an indirectly northern route so we'll consider it the home stretch.)

Hopefully, they will make it to the check point sometime today. The 3 riders got about 4 hours of sleep in a field near New Orleans last night so they should have some energy, but we hear the weather is beastly hot and humid. This is just another good reason to head north!

State Count: 34 which includes Arkansas, Louisiana and just now, Florida.

Hospitality along the way...

A few photo's from the Tennessee (Bumpus Harley-Davidson) Check Point....

Brian and his bike...
Mike making a last minute call..
Mike's bumper sticker...
Tom's bike...

Bumpus Harley and AD Farrow and Company NorthStar Harley-Davidson (Columbus, Ohio) really rolled out the red carpet for the riders! One rider was quoted saying..."you make me feel like I'm somebody!" As riders approached the stops, staff came alive (literally, the service manager at Bumbus has a bedroll in the bay to snooze between arrivals) to meet their every need. Their bikes were serviced, washed and readied while the competitors ate and showered or slept. Just an example of the warm welcome...the first female rider to arrive at AD Farrow had lost her helmet shield and was using her prescription glasses to protect her eyes. Since they didn't have a replacement in stock, an employee ran home to give her his shield. She was back on the road in no time! Talk about going above and beyond the call of duty!!! Every rider was treated as royalty at these Harley Dealerships!

Heading East

As the sun sets in the west, our riders, having reached the edge of the continent, have transitioned eastward.

A ferry ride? This is the Texas to Louisiana Ferry... is he joking?

Last night: no gas, no sleep....

A few details have emerged from the warriors today (Wednesday, August 17th)...

It seems they almost ran out of gas during the night, with no stations open. They were able to continue only after buying gas from a local resident. (They flagged down a motorist!) In any case, the search for gas left little time for sleep.

Also, Bumpus Harley-Davidson in Murfreesboro, TN posted some pictures on Facebook of the riders checking in, including Brian, Mike and Tom! Check it out!

Day 12 and 13...Check Point 11, been there, done that...

10,000 miles behind, 4,000 more to go....

The riding trio of Brian, Mike and Tom covered some beautiful ground yesterday (Tuesday, August 16th) as they travelled through Tennessee to Check Point #11 in Murfreesboro. The beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway lead to the 318 turns of the Tail of the Dragon around 2:00 PM.

They arrived at the check point around 7:00 PM and forged on into the night. The guys rode through Alabama and into Mississippi where they got a few hours of sleep.

The official state count is now 31.

And what's in store for today is... More Riding!!!!!!

The next Check Point is in Rocky Mount, North Carolina which is 2000 mile away! Obviously they will not be travelling as the crow flies, instead, first they will cover (Arkansas?), Louisiana, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Along the way they travel the Natchez Trace Parkway, through Louisiana Bayou Country and Bourbon Street (Brian stay on the bike... keep riding), Coastal Louisiana to Mobile, Al, Pensacola, Coastal Florida, Southern Georgia and South Carolina.

It's a Beautiful Day!

Riding the Tail of the Dragon!

Slow Ride... Take it Easy....

This morning, after a 6 hour rest stop in the mountains of Tennessee, Brian (and the two fellow riders he's currently travelling with) is approaching the Tail of the Dragon. This iconic mountain ride takes 318 turns in 11 miles. With it's hair-pin turns, limited visibility and sheer cliff drop-offs, we're glad he's riding in daylight!

He's now added West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina to the state count which is totalling 29!!!!!

Brian's Favorite Check Point!!!!!

The winner is.....AD Farrow and Company NorthStar Harley-Davidson!!!! The entire team, watching the riders approach via GPS displayed on the big screen, welcomed each and every rider as VIP's!
They serviced the bike (oil change and brake check) while Brian showered, and they even washed the road dirt off the bike.

The best part of the stop for Brian was probably Candy's surprise appearance. She delivered a care package and encouragement before sending Brian on his way.

This photo, while Brian was getting off his bike, shows his reaction when he glimpses Candy.

Good Morning Columbus!

Within the next hour or so, Brian should be arriving at the 10th Check Point, Columbus, Ohio.
He will be surprised to see Candy waiting for him with words of encouragement and a care package!!!

The stop is at AD Farrow & Company NorthStar Harley-Davidson Dealer, America's oldest Harley dealer, celebrating their 100th year!

New state count: 24... only 3 more Check Points before The Finish Line!!!!

After the stop (and maybe some rest?), Brian will be heading to Check Point #11 in Tennessee. The route will take him through West Virginia and Kentucky, across the Eastern Continental Divide, into Ashville, NC, through the Great Smoky Mountains, into Cherokee, NC and the Tail of the Dragon motorcycle road (which some people ride on their bicycles).

Blue Skies in Michigan!

Michigan's Upper Peninsula... Brian is closing in on the Mackinac Bridge.

On to Ohio... via the Mackinac Bridge!

The 9th Check Point (Wisconsin) is in his rear view mirror this morning, not sure when it came and went or if Brian got any sleep but he's off and running to Check Point #10 in Columbus, OH.

Today's travels will take Brian north through Wisconsin, into the upper Peninsula of Michigan, across the Mackinaw Bridge and through the rest of Michigan, then on to Indiana and Ohio.

The current state count is 21!

"Whoa-oa-oa! I feel good, I knew that I would, now..."

On the road again after a long sleep...

Brian rides through Missouri! After nearly 7 hours of rest, Brian hit the road this morning, on his way to Check Point #9 in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.

We'll hope for pictures along the way as he travels through the beautiful states of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota.

Checkpoint #8 during the night...

Today's update...

Candy just heard from Brian... he is approximately 2 hours from Check Point #8, Kansas City, MO.

Brian's focus today seems to have been on riding, or the scenery wasn't worth sending, as we received no photos at all!

Since he will be arriving during the wee hours of the night, we decided to update everyone now. Brian has ridden into some weather and has had to don his rain gear (first time this trip). He plans on stopping over in Kansas City, MO (at the Check Point) for a pit stop... shower, food and some sleep.

16 states now, Missouri will be the 17th...

Hopefully, he will get several hours of rest before he hits the road. Checkpoint #9 is in Wisconsin!

7th Check Point...Santa Fe

Milestone Stop... One Week, 14 States, approximately 7,000 Miles of Riding...

This morning, 7 days, 2 hour, 46 minutes since he left Mesa, Brian has arrived at the 7th Check Point in Santa Fe, New Mexico. From here he heads to Kansas City, Missouri on a route that will take him through the panhandle of Texas, the tip of Oklahoma, across nearly the length Kansas and on into Missouri.

7 check points down...7 to go!

"I'm taking my talents to Sturgis"

Brian has arrived at the 5th Check Point: Sturgis, SD (Wednesday, 8/10/11 at 2:11 PM)!!!! Looks like he's just in time for the 71st annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Brian, stay on your bike, keep riding!!!

Quick update...

Brian has been on the road for approximately 128 hours (minus the couple he has slept). He has travelled through the following 11 states: Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota and is soon to arrive at the 5th Check Point, Sturgis, South Dakota.
He has been sending many photo's from the road and we have many more from before the start. Hopefully, we'll get those up ASAP!

I just wanted to let everyone know that Brian is doing well and he is forging on!

Pre-Race Meeting

A plan comes together....

Riders are assembled and ready, prepared for their dawn departure!

More info to follow....

And they're off!

Who is taking this picture????

Bright and early Sunday morning, Brian and Candy headed to Phoenix for the start of the Challenge. For Candy, it was a one-way trip. She will be flying home after the start on the 5th.

Brian reports from the road...

They made good time on their way out west. Travelling with another rider, Curt Belcher, from Kentucky, Brian and Candy rode about 1000 miles a day. They made it to Albuquerque, NM on Tuesday morning in just two and one half days. Wednesday morning was spent at Thunderbird Harley (in Albuquerque) for planned service and a new set of tires. Then they forged on to Mesa, the official start of the Challenge, arriving later that day.

Brian and the bike have been through registration and check in and are officially ready to go! Thursday was spent taking care of last minute details, resting and replenishing fluids (of course!).

PS: No word on how Candy managed the miles... does this earn her an "Iron Butt" of her own?

Blessings and Beer.....

Before hitting the road ...

Father Kevin blessed the Harley.

Then off to Kepner's for a send off...
